Flag Etiquette
- When the flag is lowered it should be received by waiting hands as it is not allowed to touch the ground or any other object.
- When a flag is worn out to the point that is it no longer fit to serve as a symbol of the U.S. it must be burned in a dignified manner.
- When the U.S. flag is on the same flagpole with another flag it must always be flown at the top. The only exception is if there is a church pennant - that may be flown above during church services.
- When the flag is hanging over a sidewalk the union must be the farthest from the building.
- When the flag is hanging over a street the union must face the north or east and it must be hung vertically.
- When a U.S. flag is flown at the same time (different poles) of a state, community, or society flag, the U.S. flag must be placed to its own right. Other rules that apply here: no other flags can be larger, no flag should ever be placed above it, and the U.S. flag must be raised first and lowered last.
- When the U.S. flag and a national banner of another country are flown they must be flown on poles of the same height, equal in size, and raised and lowered at the same time.
- When on display indoors the flag must be placed to the right of the speaker or staging area. While all other flags should be to the left.
- When a flag is hung against a wall the union must be at the top, to the flag’s own right.
- When two flags are hung together with crossed staffs the flag must be on it’s own right (viewers left) and the staff should be in front of the other flags staff.
- When the flag is flown on a car it must be firmly clamped to the right side either the chassis or the fender.
- When in mourning the flag is to be flown at half staff. This is for principal government leaders and presidential/gubernatorial order.
- When the flag is covering a casket it must be placed with the union at the head and over the left shoulder. However, the flag should not be lowered into the grave.
- Half Staff Hoisting Directions: first raise the flag to the peak and lower it to the half way point. Next raise the flag to the peak for a moment again and lower again.
- On Memorial Day: the flag is flown at half staff until noon and full staff noon to sunset.
